General Glazing & Safety Glass

Broken Commercial Glass

General Glazing & Safety Glass

General glazing work to replace or fit windows, doors or mirrors is the foundation of our business.

At Tudor Glass we stock all types of general household and commercial glass that is required to complete day to day installations and repairs.  This includes a variety of thickness, treatments, edge finishes and treatments.

Laminated Safety Glass

Safety glass is used in key high-risk areas such as sliding doors, shower screens and commercial applications.  In previous years, safety glass consisted mostly of figure roll wired reinforced glass but in recent times this has been replaced with much more attractive options.

Australian standards dictate that safety glass must be used in specified circumstances which means that it is used frequently to replace ordinary broken glass.  Laminated glass is the most popular safety glass in commercial and domestic applications.

Laminated safety glass consists of two or more layers of ordinary glass between which is compressed a plastic layer.  The lamination holds the glass together in case of breakage to avoid dangerous shards and improves security, strength and stability.

Laminated glass is available in a vast range of thicknesses and is available for virtually all glazing applications.  Naturally, it is available in the clear form but it is also available in various tints such as grey or bronze or translucent whites by either tinting or colouring the PVB layer or the glass itself.

The main features of safety glass are:

  • Safety – Glass remains in tact to reduce shards and the risk of injury.
  • Security – Laminated glass is stronger, providing resistance to penetration.
  • Solar Insulation – The PVB layer in laminated glass blocks out 99% of UV light.
  • Thermal Insulation – Coloured PVB layers and/or tinted glass provides excellent thermal insulation properties.
  • Noise Insulation – The additional PVB layer provided greater noise insulation than ordinary glass.  Additionally, thermal PVB layers can be used to further insulate against noise.

Toughened Safety Glass

Toughened safety glass is five times stronger than ordinary glass of the same thickness. Unlike laminated safety glass, which is fused using a PVB layer, toughened glass is heat resistant to very high temperatures.  This makes it ideal for circumstances where the benefits of ordinary glass need to be combined with strength and great heat resistance.

In case of breakage, toughened glass breaks into small relatively harmless pieces compared to long shards of glass that occur when ordinary glass is broken.

The toughening process involves heating the glass to very high temperatures and then subsequently cooling the glass in a controlled environment.  This process creates varying stress layers in the glass that give it it’s final strength.

Toughened glass cannot be worked after the toughening process.  It must therefore be cut to size and all edge work and holes must be cut prior to toughening.

Glass Cutting for Small Projects

Perhaps you require a lid for a fish tank, glass for a picture frame or a small window.  Feel free to come down to our workshop where we can usually help you while you wait.

We can also cut holes into glass and we can supply round or oval glass cut to size for your small project. Please note however, not all glass is suitable for cutting, such as toughened safety glass and not all jobs can be done while you wait.

Obscured Patterned and Acid Etched Glass

At Tudor Glass we have a large selection of glass styles to choose from.  Below is a small sample of what is available in our range of patterned and acid etch glass.  This glass is available in various thicknesses and is ideal for shower screens, doors, french doors and any other application where you require some privacy such as bathroom windows.  Thicker patterned glasses (over 4mm) can be toughened.

Acid etched glass creates a translucent appearance which obscures the view while maintaining a high level of light transmittance.  Acid etched glass is suitable for indoor and outdoor applications such as offices, kitchens, bathrooms, balconies and doors.

Obscured acid etched and patterned glass is suitable for many applications.  This may not only be obscure the view coming into the room, perhaps also the view out of a room, such as windows close to ugly fences or other obstructions.  Popular uses include the following:

  • Interior partitions
  • Office enclosures
  • Shower screens and bath enclosures
  • Interior and exterior doors
  • French doors
  • Doors
  • Wardrobe doors
  • Balustrades and railings
  • Mirror and closet doors
  • Display fixtures
  • Flooring and stairs
  • Sealed units
  • Splashbacks
  • Furniture and kitchen components
  • Shelving
  • Wall decoration
